Significance of Directions in Vastu Shastra

Directions play an important role in Vastu. There are ten directions in total in vastu viz. North, South, East, West, Northeast (Ishan), Southeast (Agneya), Southwest (Nirutya), Northwest (Vayaya), Space and Patal. Each of these directions has special significance and importance.

North is considered to be the direction of the God of wealth and prosperity Kuber. This direction should be kept beautiful and less burdened. There should be big openings in this area.

South is considered to be the direction of the God of death Yam. This area is also in charge of justice and legal affairs. South stores the wealth in the form of energy.

East is considered to be the direction of the God of rains, festivity and power Indra. This direction is considered important for growth. Any obstruction in the east can create obstruction in life.

West is considered to be the direction of the God of rain, fame and fate Varun. One should never build openings or entries from this direction as it is considered bad luck.

Northeast is considered to be the direction of Lord Shiva and hence is very pious. One should avoid building bedrooms, stores toilet and heavy structures in this area.

Southeast is considered to be the direction of Lord Agnidev. This direction should always be allocated for fire related works.

Southwest is considered to be the direction of Demon Niriti. This direction gives you confidence, wealth and health. Bad Southwest can bring behavioral issues like depression.

Northwest is considered to be the direction of Vayudev. This direction creates opportunities in the life. On the downside it can also bring instability, confusion and ill health.
