Legend behind Four Heads of Lord Brahma

Lord Brahma is one of the Trimurti of Hinduism (others being Lord Vishnu and Shiva). As depicted in Hindu cosmology, he is the creator of the universe who was self born out of a Lotus flower, thus the name Prajapati.

In the Vedas, Lord Brahma is attributed with four heads, four arms, and red skin. He carries a water pot, a spoon, a book of vedas, a rosary and a Lotus in each different hand.

When creating the universe, Lord Brahma created 10 sons and one daughter named Shatarupa for a helping hand. Shatarupa was so beautiful that even the Lord himself was completely mesmerized by her beauty. Because of his extreme infatuation, he used to stare at her wherever she went. To enable himself to see her from all angles he gave himself a second, third, and fourth head.

This act of Brahma made Shatarupa disgusted and tried to escape his gaze and descended to heaven. Brahma created a fifth head for himself for see her rise.

Lord Shiva got very angry with Brahma for this unholy behavior towards his daughter Shatarupa and as a punishment he chopped off his fifth head and cursed him that no mortal would ever worship Lord Brahma.
