7 Unknown Facts about Sage Parshuram

Born to Saptarishi Jamadagni and Goddess Renuka in the Dwapara Yuga, Sage Parshuram is believed to be the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. He is immortal according to Hindu mythology and many legends suggest that he still lives at the Mahendragiri Mountain Peak in Orissa.

1. Lord Shiva gave Parshuram`s famous axe as a boon after He was pleased by the Sage`s strict penance.

2. Lord Indra, Parshuram killed him and rescued the calf. To avenge Kartavirya`s death, his son killed Jamdagni and in return Parshuram killed all kshatriya 21 times to restore peace on earth.

3. In Ramayan, he gave the bow of Shiva to Janaka for Sita`s swayamvar and in Mahabharat he was the mentor to Bhishma, Drona and Karna.

4. Parshuram and Saptarishi Agasthya founded the oldest martial art known to mankind, Kalaripayattu.

5. His mother Renuka was known for her chastity and devotion for her husband which was so strong that she was able to fetch water in unbaked clay pot. One day, while at the river she saw some gandharva and for a moment was filled with desire. Jamadagni came to know everything with his yogic power. He called his son gave him an axe and ask him to kill his mother. An obedient Parshuram beheaded his mother and brothers who refused the task of beheading in the first place. But when he was granted two boon, he asked for his mother and brothers` life back.

6. When Parshuram discovered that Karna was a Kshatriya and not a Brahmin, he cursed Karna that he will forget his skills at the time when he will need it most. However, a few other theories suggest that, Lord Parshuram did not curse Karna. Instead He told Karna would be the situation during his death.
